Mehbooba trying to revive Mufti Sayeed’s emotional attachment with R S Pura belt

Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 15: In an unscheduled visit, the president of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Monday visited different areas of R S Pura and interacted with people from different sections of the society in border areas.
By visiting different areas of R S Pura, Mehbooba Mufti has given a message to the inhabitants of this belt which always supported the late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed at every crucial moment.
Mufti Sayeed had an emotional attachment with R S Pura and people of this border belt too have high regard and respect for Mufti to whom they always treated more than a “Messiah”.
Mufti was the only politician of J&K since 1947, who despite being a Kashmiri, had won election from Jammu region thus bulldozing the wall of the regional divide in the State. This belt had voted overwhelmingly in support of Mufti which ensured his victory as MLA from this seat.
In the 1983 assembly elections, Mufti had contested elections as a Congress candidate from two segments of Bijbehara, his native place, and from Homeshalibugh in South Kashmir but had lost on both. In 1985 when by-election to RS Pura assembly segment was held as the sitting legislator Janak Raj Gupta was elected as Lok Sabha member, Congress had fielded Mufti as party candidate from this seat and he won comfortably.
Mufti, throughout his life, had reciprocated the gesture shown by the resident of R S Pura in 1985. It was Mufti’s emotional attachment with this belt that he made it a point to launch campaign of successive elections from the R S Pura belt which is now bifurcated into two assembly constituencies of R S Pura and Suchetgarh.
During the last assembly elections, held in 2014, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had launched the campaign from the Baspura area on November 25, 2014, and had struck an emotional chord with the residents of R S Pura by recalling how people of this belt had elected him as MLA in the year 1985. “I got political enlightenment from R S Pura because this region has set an example of inter-regional unity” a visible emotional Mufti had told the gathering while recalling that a vicious campaign was launched against him in 1983 assembly elections in Kashmir Valley.
