Congress on crossroads
11/19/2021 10:41:38 PM
After facing revolt in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan, Congress party is facing similar kind of situation in Jammu and Kashmir as the leaders considered close to former J&K chief minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, have tendered their resignations and demanding that Azad be given the charge.
After leaders forwarded their resignations to J&K Congress incharge, Rajni Patil, the party constituted a disciplinary panel to deal with Azad loyalists. Surprisingly the party high command has included Ambika Soni in the committee who was earlier incharge of J&K affairs of the party.
The Congress party in J&K has been at a crossroads since the day party high command has sidelined Azad. The resignations of almost all the top leaders of the party are an indication that Congress has already split in J&K and Azad may spring a surprise soon.
Despite being a part of coalition government in J&K for 12-years first with Peoples Democratic Party from 2002 to 2008 and then with National Conference from 2019 to 2014, the Congress Party has not been able to retain its ground. Many leaders, who had a say in Jammu region, have switched their loyalties, while in Kashmir most of them have reposed faith in Azad.
The Congress Party in the Union Territory is on the cross roads. The party making a comeback looks like a difficult task.
If the party high command fails to mend the fences with Azad, the Congress may even lose its identity in Jammu. and Kashmir. After being ousted from power, the party leaders have not been able to play a role of a good opposition. They have just allowed things to slip out from their hands. During the past few years Jammu people have faced many ups and downs but the Congress leaders have just not shown any concern towards their issues.
There is a possibility of assembly elections being held in J&K in a few months. Political parties have already geared up for the elections. The only party that appears to be in disarray is Congress. If it fails to keep its flock intact it may face a defeat again. If Azad decides to part ways things will become more difficult for the “Grand Old Party” in Jammu and Kashmir. Rather than taking disciplinary action against the rebels the party high command should try to sort out differences with the rebels.
