Peripheral hospital discharges patient; turns out to be heart patient, gets operated upon | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 29: A young and fit patient in his early 30s developed chest pain for which he was admitted at a peripheral hospital. His ECG did not show any gross abnormality and his cardiac markers were also not raised. As the patient was young and fit and had no cardiac risk factors, he was discharged after observing for 24 hours. But on the same night, he again developed severe chest pain, so he called Dr Neeraj Mahajan, Director Cath Lab and Head, Division of Cardiology at Ankur Maitrika Hospital, who advised to come to AMH immediately. An ECG was done in ER that showed very subtle changes which were picked up by Dr Neeraj. So the patient was immediately taken to Cardiac Cath lab for an urgent coronary angiography. To everyone’s surprise, there was complete blockage of one of the most important coronary arteries. It was successfully opened up using a medicated stent. The whole procedure was done via wrist (Radial artery approach), which is quite comfortable for the patient as the patient can walk immediately after the procedure, although to perform angioplasty from the radial artery is quite cumbersome for the doctor and needs a lot of experience. The patient was discharged from the hospital the next day. Dr Mahajan explained that in many cases of acute heart attack, an initial ECG may be entirely normal or may show very subtle changes which are really hard to pick at times, so it is always advisable to repeat the ECG and take an expert’s opinion whenever such a diagnostic dilemma arises. |
