Training programme on value addition in floriculture organized at Kunaya in Reasi

JAMMU, Dec 2: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Directorate of Extension, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu in collaboration with NABARD, Reasi and JKNRLM organized training programme on “Value Addition in Floriculture” today at Kunaya village.
The programme was attended by the women Self Help Group (SHG) members of the area. The programme was organized under the guidance of Vice Chancellor, Prof. J P Sharma and Director Extension, Prof S K Gupta of SKUAST-J. Scientist & Head of KVK, Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal, warmly welcomed the participants.
Dr. Banarsi spoke on the scope of recycling of waste flowers and suggested the participants to utilize the waste flowers to make different types of useful products to sale in the market which can generate income and employment for them. He said that by the value addition in floriculture new livelihood opportunities can be generated for the rural women of the hilly areas. He said that flowers are the holy entities but are wasted after offerings which cause phenomenal ecological hazard.
Dr. Banarsi stressed on SHG formation and entrepreneurship development among the farm women. Practical session on dhoop sticks making, organic floral lamps making, gods and goddesses idols, havankund, shuv laav etc. from the floral waste was organized during the programme. The participants were trained in making different kinds of products from the waste flowers.
Bansi Lal, Vice-President, Mazdoor Dastakar Union, J&K, thanked KVK, Reasi for organizing such an innovative training programme. He narrated that waste flowers can be collected from temples, weddings, fields etc. to make different types of products to enhance the income of farm women. He discussed on the packaging, branding and marketing of floral products. He urged the trainees to make innovative products from waste flowers so that their income and employment can be enhanced.
