SKUAST-J organizes 'farmer awareness cum distribution programme' at Rathana | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 6: In the series of 75 years of independence to celebrate 'Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav', agro-meteorology section of SKUAST-J under the aegis of Prof. J. P Sharma, Vice Chancellor and guidance of Dr. Jag Paul Sharma, Ex-Director Research cum Registrar of SKUAS-Jammu organized one day "farmer awareness cum distribution programme" at Rathana, R S Pura under SC-SP head of AICRPAM project. About 150 farmers participated in the programme. Dr. Mahender Singh, senior scientist and in-charge AICRPAM discussed in detail about importance of organizing this awareness programme. He gave detailed information on importance of weather in day to day field management operations and the forecast services provided by agro-meteorology which enhance the income of farmers and reduce the input cost of different crops. Prof. Jag Paul Sharma highlighted various research activities undertaken by the university and also requested to more and more participation of such type of programme. He encouraged the farmers for mushroom cultivation in a collective approach which help them to enhance the income at the cost of less investment. He also distributed wheat variety (WH-1021 WH-1080 and HD-3086) to 150 farmers for higher productivity. Dr. Deepak Kumar, Associate Professor, Plant Pathology, emphasized the farmers to adopt long-term strategies for the minimization of pest and disease occurrence preferably by enhancing natural control mechanisms for growing a healthy crop. Specific measures include the use of disease- and pest-resistant crops, rotation of crops to provide disease breaks for susceptible crops, apply non-chemical control practices. |
