JU organizes panel discussion on violence against women | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Dec 8: Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu (JU) in collaboration with ‘Bharathidasan University, Indian Association for Women’s Studies, Regional Association for women’s studies and All India Women’s studies students forum organized online panel discussion on the theme ‘Orange the World: End Violence against Women Now’. The session was chaired by Prof. N. Manimekalai, Director and Head, Women’s Studies Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapalli and moderated by Prof. Vishav Raksha, Director Centre for Women’s Studies and HOD Sociology University of Jammu. The session began with the welcome address by Prof. Vishav Raksha who also gave a brief introduction of all the panelists. Prof. Manimekalai gave the overview of the conduct of the 16 days Webinar Series in commemoration of ‘International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women 2021’. The 1st panelist Hafiza Muzaffar, Ex. Secretary JK Commission for Women, J&K Govt., Mission Director, Executive Director, Rehabilitation council, J&K Govt., National Empowerment Mission, J&K Govt. spoke on the topic “Domestic Violence in pre-covid & post covid times” She gave insights on the reasons and factors for the rise of domestic violence cases in Kashmir during a pandemic. The 2nd panelist Dr. Hema Gandotra, Faculty, Department of Sociology, University of Jammu spoke on “Violence, Abuse and Third Gender: An insight” focusing on the issues and problems faced by Third Gender through narrating some of the case studies. The 3rd panelist Dr. Ellora Puri, Faculty, Department of Political Science, University of Jammu deliberated on the topic ‘Shadow pandemic: What is new about it? Rhetoric & Reality. She gave details about the statistics related to violence against women and talked about how violence against women is a continuous pandemic since long and how we need to make efforts to end it. The 4th panelist Dr. Saranjit Kaur, Faculty, Centre for Women’s studies, University of Jammu, spoke on ‘Domestic violence against women in Jammu district: An analysis’. She briefed about the conceptual understanding of the concept of Domestic violence and explained various causes responsible for domestic violence against women in the Jammu District with the help of case studies. At the end of the session, Prof. Manimekalai gave the closing remarks and summed up the views presented by various speakers. The webinar was attended by students, scholars, and faculty members from different universities across India and also within University. The session was very interactive and many queries and observations were raised by the participants which were addressed by the resource persons to their satisfaction. |
