CDS Rawat’s death a big loss | | | Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat dying in an air crash is a big loss for “New India.” After putting in 43 years of service in Army, CDS Rawat was tasked with making the Indian military modern and capable of dealing with any emerging security challenges on the Northern or Western borders. Unfortunately, his life was cut short after a tragic chopper crash on Wednesday in the Nilgiri Hills in Tamil Nadu. General Rawat had taken charge as India’s first Chief of Defence Staff on January 1, 2020. The position was created to integrate the three services — Army, Navy and Air Force. The CDS is mandated to facilitate integration, ensure best economical use of resources allocated to the armed forces and bring uniformity in the procurement procedure. As CDS, General Rawat was also the Principal Military Advisor to the Defence Minister on all tri-services matters. Later, he was also appointed as the head of the newly-created Department of Military Affairs. Former Army Chief Bipin Rawat was one of the most trusted lieutenants of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and one of the main architect’s of New India. His valuable ideas and suggestions were taken very seriously by the Prime Minister and his cabinet. General Rawat’s death has created a void which won’t be filled up so easily. He was a key architect of major military operations carried out by India in the recent times, including the surgical strike at terror camps in September 2016 across the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir as well as the cross-border air strike at terror camp in Pakistan’s Balakote in February 2019. The surgical strike and the air strike were in response to major attacks planned in Pakistan and carried out in Jammu and Kashmir. As Army Chief General Rawat remained at forefront and led by an example. As the first CDS, General Bipin Rawat integrated Army, Navy and Air Force and played a key role in ensuring optimum utilisation of allocated budget, ushering more synergy in procurement, training and operations of the services through joint planning and integration. He facilitated indigenisation of weapons and equipment to the maximum extent possible while formulating the overall defence acquisition plan for the three services. His efforts opened a new chapter in the country’s defence mechanism. CDS General Rawat will always be remembered as patriot who dedicated his life in service to the nation. His significant contributions towards building a “New India” will always remain a guiding force. Entire nation is saddened by General Rawat’s tragic death as the country has lost a hero, who inspired many to follow his footsteps. |
