Eying assembly polls, BJP trying to woo Paharis
12/17/2021 11:00:54 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 17: Eying the coming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, BJP is openly playing thePahari card to strengthen its base in areas dominated by Pahari-speaking people.
Party leaders are playing this ethnic card to strengthen its base in the twin border districts of Poonch-Rajouri and also in Pahari-dominated belts in Kupwara and Baramulla districts of North Kashmir. For the last two weeks, BJP president Ravinder Raina, who himself is a Pahari, isholding rallies in different parts of Pahari-dominated areas to assure the people that his party would grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to Pahari-speaking people.
BJP is focusing on Pahari to improve its tally in the coming assembly elections in J&K. In twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri Paharis are a dominant force.
BJP leadership has decided to concentrate on this ethnic group to win maximum seats from these two districts. In the2014 assembly elections, out of a total of seven seats, BJP won only the Nowshera constituency. “This time we will focus on Paharis to win maximum seats from this belt”, said a senior BJP leader.
Wishing anonymity, the BJP leader said that the party will focus on different ethnic groups to make inroads in new areas in the coming assembly elections.“Not only in Poonch-Rajouri, but we are also hoping to win some seats from North Kashmir’s Baramulla and Kupwara district with the support of Pahari speaking people”, he said and added that the party has received an overwhelming response in its campaign to woo Paharis. During his visit to Jammu in October, Union Home Minister, Amit Shah had promised that the BJP will ensure the political empowerment of Paharis.
While addressing a rally at Bhagwati Nagar Jammu, Amit Shah had stated, “the elected members of Pahari community can now become a minister and Chief Minister of Jammu Kashmir which was earlier was not possible due to dynastic politics”. It was only after the speech of the Union Home Minister at Jammu, BJP has intensified its campaign to woo Paharis before the assembly elections.
