No holiday on Sept 23: BJP not happy with Govt’s decision to disrespect Jammu’s sentiment | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 17: Anger brewing among senior BJP leaders against the decision of the J&K government not to declare September 23-the birth anniversary of the last Dogra ruler of the erstwhile state of J&K as a public holiday. Although senior leaders are hesitating to express their anger in public, they have conveyed their feelings to the higher-ups in the government. Sources in the BJP said that party leadership was hoping that September 23 would be declared as a public holiday at least in the list of holidays for the Jammu region. But, they were shocked when the J&K government has decided to go against the wishes and popular demand of various Jammu-based political and social groups. The UT administration on Thursday released the list of holidays for the calendar year-2022, under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 which clearly mentioned that there has been no holiday on the birth anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh—a demand that has witnessed widespread protests across different parts of Jammu region. The decision of not declaring a holiday on September 23 is likely to create problems for the ruling BJP at the Centre as it had been facing criticism from different quarters for not respecting the sentiments of the Jammu people. During a recent protest of Yuva Rajput Sabha J&K BJP president Ravinder Raina had promised to support this demand. While senior leaders have maintained a guarded silence, a new entrant in the party and former minister, Surjeet Singh Slathia stated that September 23 should be declared as a holiday. “I support the demand of declaring September 23 as a holiday”, Slathia told the Early Times. |
