Kashmir operation called off | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Jan 13: Security forces on Thursday called off an anti-militancy operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district that was launched the previous evening and which left a policeman and a Pakistani militant dead, officials said. Three soldiers and two civilians were wounded in the fighting. "The operation at Pariwan village in Kulgam has been closed," a senior security officer said. The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday identified the slain militant as Babar Bhai of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), who was said to be active since 2018 in Shopian and Kulgam districts. An AK rifle, a pistol and two grenades were recovered from the site, a police tweet said. The gunfight erupted on Wednesday evening when the police, the Army's 34 Rashtriya Rifles and the 18th Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force launched a cordon and a search operation in Pariwan village in Kulgam. "As the forces cordoned off the suspected spot, the hidden terrorists opened fire indiscriminately. In the initial firing, a policeman and three army men were wounded," a police officer said. Constable Rohit Chhib succumbed to his injuries. The injured soldiers were shifted to the Army's Srinagar hospital. This year 14 militants including top commanders of the Lashkar-e-Toiba and Jaish have been killed in seven gunfights. |
