A license in the name of SKUAST-Jammu was issued by Wireless Planning and Communication Wing, Ministry of Communications, New Delhi recently. Initially, community radio station will broadcast programmes for audience (radio listeners) for two hours in the morning with repetition of same broadcast in the evening. Prof. J. P. Sharma, Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-J congratulated scientists and farmers for getting sanction of CRS at Jammu. While highlighting the importance of Community Radio Station, Professor J P Sharma briefed that the main aim of establishing the Radio Kissan Jammu is to remain connected with the farming community of the catchment area, as the radio has the ability to reach out to the people even while working in their fields and makes them aware of various schemes and opportunities in agriculture and allied fields. He further said that community radio station will act as a mouthpiece of the university and compliment the extension efforts and works of the university. Prof Sharma also thanked the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Govt. of India for sanctioning and developing Community Radio Stations (CRS) for Jammu for the benefit of citizens in general and farmers in particular. Vice Chancellor, Prof J P Sharma further informed that the community radio station will cover a population with an aerial distance of around 15 kms from SKUAST-Jammu, Chatha. A community radio means broadcasting with the objective of serving the cause of the community in the service area. The uniqueness of the community radio is the involvement of the community members in the broadcast of the programmes. It will operate on Frequency Modulation (FM) and these are different from FM stations as its transmitters are of very low power (100 Watt of effective radiated power). While FM radios transmit mostly film based entertainment programmes produced by professionals, the CRS transmits programmes mostly on development issues concerning the requirement of the community it addresses. Dr J P Sharma appreciated efforts of Dr. Rakesh Nanda, Director Education & Head, and Division of Agriculture Extension Education for making dedicated and relentless efforts in the establishment of the Community Radio Station. Dr Nanda informed that for CRS, the programmes are made with the participation of the community. The calendar of activities run by the CRS will decided in consultation with the community in the form of programs that will not only entertain them but also enrich their cultural heritage and keep them in tune with the mainstream. |
