Power outage triggers protest, police use force, resort to tear gas shelling

Kishtwar, Apr 7: The people living in power hub Districts of Doda and Kishtwar are continuously facing power crises and the areas witnessed several hours power cuts even during the holly month of Ramadan forcing the people to chose agitating path and in one such attempt the protest took ugly turn following use of tear gas shelling and lathicharge on the protesters at Kahara in Sub Division Thathri of Doda District.
As per the details available with Early Times, the protest against PDD in Kahara (Doda) turned violent after police lathicharged protesters in view of VIP movement.
The official sources said that the residents of Tanta Panchayat organised protest at Kahara market against PDD department for delay in providing electricity to various areas of panchayat beside also against the huge power cuts witnessed by the people in twin Districts even during the on going holly month of Ramadan, particularly at Sehri and Iftari time.
The sources said that some men in uniform reach the spot and tried to clear the protesters in view of some VIP movement that led to the arguments between Police and Protesters and in no time it turn violent following police used Lathicharge and fired tear gas shells at the protesters to disburse them. In this incident BDC Chairperson Kahara Fatima Begum and various protesters got injured.
After the ugly face off between the police and the protesters, the shopkeepers of Kahara Market shutdown the market and civil societies members and other representatives joined the protest and raised slogans against the police and administration demanding action against the police officials involved in using force against the peaceful protesters. SSP Doda also tried to pacify the angry protestors and assured action against the guilty officials and appeal for peace.
Later SDM Thathri Ather Amin Zargar along with Sub Divisional level administration reached spot and held talks with agitating people.
After written assurances given by the PDD officials beside action initiated against the erring police officials, the people called off the protest.
Administration also assured to provide free treatment to all the injured persons who were injured in police action.
