agencies COLOMBO, Apr 8: The ongoing economic crisis in Sri Lanka has affected the sports teams as many of them are unable to participate in international games at Asian and World level due to dollar crisis, media reports said on Friday. There is a possibility of Sri Lanka missing several international competitions this year including volleyball, athletics, football, badminton, weightlifting, netball, table tennis, judo and wrestling. As many as 30 national sports associations which depended on funds approved by the National Sports Council (NSC) and High Performance Sports Programme to participate in international competitions, foreign training and allowances for foreign coaches are in a quandary with the NSC not functioning, the Daily Mirror reported. Entry fees and related expenditure for hotel accommodation have to be paid in dollars but with local bank not offering credit facilities, Sri Lanka is unable to participate in international competitions, Sri Lankan newspaper Daily Mirror reported. The island was scheduled to take part in many competitions at international level but being affected by the crisis they are unable to pay for their entry fees. |
