| Old city shuts in memory of Farooq, Lone | | |

SRINAGAR, May 21: A partial shutdown was observed in Srinagar's old city on Saturday to mark the death anniversaries of Molvi Mohammad Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone.
The All Parties Hurriyat Conference headed by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had called for a bandh in Kashmir to pay tributes to two leaders.
On this day in 2002, Gani Lone was shot dead during a rally to mark the death anniversary of Moulvi Farooq in Srinagar. Moulvi Farooq, the father of Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, was assassinated in 1990.
Shops and other commercial activities were suspended in most parts of the old city including Jamia Masjid, Nowhatta, Gojwara, Rajouri Kadal, Saraf Kadal and Mahraj Ganj areas. But the transport was running normally on the roads.
There was no impact of the shutdown in other parts of Srinagar and Kashmir valley.
The separatist group had also asked people to visit Eidgah in old Srinagar, where the two leaders have been laid to rest, and offer prayers for them.
Witnesses said heavy security forces were deployed at Eid Gah but there was no restriction on the movement of people. |
