Uncertainty looms large over existence of Panthers Party | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 1: With the demise of Prof. Bhim Singh uncertainty looms large over the existence of the Jammu and Kashmir Panthers, the only recognized and registered regional party of the Jammu region. Panthers Party, which was founded by Prof Bhim Singh after saying goodbye to Congress in 1982, is the only regional party in the Jammu region. Although Panthers Party never emerges as a big force in the Jammu region like BJP and Congress, the party has a strong base in Udhampur district which is the home district of Prof Bhim Singh and other former leaders of the party. It was only in the year 2002, Panthers Party won an all-time high four assembly seats in the house of 87. Before the death of Prof. Bhim Singh, almost all senior leaders deserted the party due to serious differences between former Minister Harsh Dev Singh and former MLA Balwant Singh Mankotia. As reported earlier, before his demise Prof Bhim Singh helplessly witnessed the disintegration of the Panthers Party which he had floated in 1982. One of the oldest political parties of the J&K-Panthers Party is facing an identity crisis. On May 7, three-time MLA and former education minister Harsh Dev Singh joined the AAP in Delhi. Harsh Dev Singh is the chairman of the Panthers Party. Before joining Harsh Dev Singh, two former legislators of the party Balwant Singh Mankotia and Yash Paul Kundal have joined the party in New Delhi on April 10 Mankotia is a two-time MLA from Udhampur and resigned from the Panthers Party in February last year, citing a “family issue”. Kundal, another Panthers Party leader, is also a two-time MLA and former minister. |
