Azad makes final move | | | Veteran Congress leader and former J&K Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad has finally ended his 50-year old association with the “Grand Old Party.” It was in offing for a longtime as Azad was not enjoying a cordial relationship with the party high command. After his term ended in Rajya Sabha, the Congress high command sidelined him and didn’t even consider him for another term. Azad had to pay a heavy price for demanding reorganization of the party after the Congress performed poorly in 2019 parliamentary elections. A letter written by him and other Congress leaders to Sonia Gandhi annoyed the Gandhi family. Azad and the other leaders who had signed that letter were relieved of the party posts and were pushed to the fence. When the Congress gave mandate for the Rajya Sabha leaders close to Azad in J&K had claimed that the former J&K chief minister has declined to be a part of the upper house as he wants to return to Jammu and Kashmir and the party high command wants to appoint as the J&K chief. After Ghulam Ahmed Mir resigned as J&K Congress chief many were of the opinion that Azad will take over the reins of the party in J&K and would try to pull it out from the troubled waters. But Azad refused and the Congress high command appointed Viqar Rasool as its J&K chief. There was a notion that Viqar had been appointed as the Congress chief due to his close proximity with Azad and the veteran leader would operate through him. Viqar’s appointment to the top party post triggered resentment in J&K as many senior leaders tendered their resignations. Azad, who was appointed as the chief of the J&K campaign committee, also tendered his resignation from the post and watched the developments silently. On Friday he made his last move and severed all the ties with the Congress Party. After him many of his loyalists also put in their papers. Now, the speculations are rife that Azad will float his own political party in J&K next month. Azad’s resignation is a body blow to the Congress Party and without Azad things won’t be that easy for the new JKPCC chief and the party high command. |
