BIS Jammu organises orientation programme

Jammu, Aug 26: BIS Jammu and Kashmir Branch Office organized Orientation Program for Standards Club established at IIT Jammu. The program started with address by Sh. Satyadeo Lal, Senior Director & Head, BIS JKBO on Overview of BIS covering standardization, ISI Mark Certification and laboratory activities. He told that BIS is the quality ecosystem of the country and caters to the needs of end users through Conformity Assessment Schemes which are based on the quality, safety and performance parameters laid down in Indian standards. He said that ISI Mark is a means for providing third party guarantee of quality, safety and reliability of products and services to the customer. He also talked about the objectives of creation of Standards Clubs in Educational Institutions. Later, Smt. Nisha Bura, Joint Director, JKBO delivered a technical lecture on “Role of Standards in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals”. In her lecture, Smt. Bura gave detailed presentation on United Nations’ seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). There is an urgent need to take call on actions to achieve these goals by 2030 as India’s global ranking for 2022 is 121. SDGs address all the three pillars of sustainability namely Economy, Society and Environment. She informed the house that so far BIS has published more than 21,000 Indian Standards out of which some standards directly contribute in achieving these SDGs such as Clean Drinking Water, Water Foot-prints, Drinking Water Supply Management, Energy Management System, Alternate Fuels, Renewable Energy, Solid Waste Management, Recycling of different types of Wastes, Sanitation System etc.
These standards help the industry in quality production and mitigation of the environmental impact. On the sidelines of the program, need for Standardization in the area of 3D Printing Technology for component manufacturing was discussed with faculty and research scholar of IIT Jammu.
