GGM Science College organizes signature campaigning | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 17: GGM Science College under the patronage of worthy Principal Dr. Rajesh Gupta and guidance of NSS PO Dr Deepali Mahajan organized a sensitization Program Implementation of Tobacco Free Educational Institute by signature campaigning and awareness rally. ToFEI is an initiative under National Tobacco Control Programme by Jammu and Kashmir Govt. The NSS Program Officer Dr. Deepali Mahajan highlighted the Epidemiology of tobacco use Policy, Burden of tobacco in india and in the history of JK UT, COTPA 2003 and necessity of Tobacco free educational institutions. Tobacco (smoking or smokeless) use is one of the biggest public health threats the world has ever faced and it is one of the major preventable causes of death and disability worldwide. Cigarette smoking is the most popular form of tobacco use. Community education regarding tobacco and its health hazards would necessarily be an integral component of such an action plan. NSS volunteers organized signature campaigning in the college campus sensitizing students to pledge for say no to tobacco. They raised slogans holding placards and organized an awareness rally in the college campus. Anti-tobacco education needs to be targeted at decision-makers, professionals and the general public, especially the youth. In India, chewing tobacco is slowly becoming endemic. As per section 6 of the COTPA, sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products within a 100-yard radius of educational institutions is deemed illegal. The Principal and faculty appreciated the efforts of NSS outreaching the community. |
