Crowd funding: Another ploy of terror groups to raise funds | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 17: Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Dinkar Gupta said that terror groups are misusing social media platforms for raising funds. Addressing media persons on the eve of the “No Money For Terror” Conference, the NIA chief said, “Social media platforms are used as crowdfunding platforms, and finances raised through such sources are ultimately used for terror purposes. This is an issue which needs to be discussed”. Replying a question regarding the agenda of the conference in which “weak social media regulation” is one of the topics, NIA DG said that this issue fits in the agenda of the conference which it is one of the biggest emerging challenges to tackling terrorism across the globe. “Social media platforms are being used for financing and funding terrorists. Social media platforms act as crowd-funding platforms and we do have evidence of this kind of thing happening”, he said and funds raised through crowd-funding are being used to fund terror groups. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will deliver the inaugural address at the third ‘No Money for Terror’ (NMFT) Ministerial Conference on Counter-Terrorism Financing, at Hotel Taj Palace, New Delhi on 18th November at 9:30 AM. The two-day conference organized on 18th-19th November will offer a unique platform for participating nations and organizations to deliberate on the effectiveness of the current international regime on Counter Terrorism Financing as well as steps required to address emerging challenges. The conference will build on gains and learnings of the previous two conferences (held in Paris in April 2018 and in Melbourne in November 2019) and will work towards enhancing global cooperation to deny finances to terrorists and access to permissive jurisdictions to operate. It will be attended by about 450 delegates from across the world, including Ministers, Heads of Multilateral organizations and Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Heads of Delegations. During the Conference, deliberations will be held in four sessions which will focus on ‘Global Trends in Terrorism and Terrorist Financing’, ‘Use of Formal and Informal Channels of Funds for Terrorism’, ‘Emerging Technologies and Terrorist Financing’ and ‘International Co-operation to Address Challenges in Combating Terrorist Financing. |
