GI tagging of J&K products | | | Recently J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated 2-day workshop on Geographical Indications (GIs) of North-Western Himalayas. The workshop being held at SKUAST-Jammu aims to sensitise all stakeholders on GIs, the oldest category of trademarks, identify potential products & formulate future strategy to empower rural communities. LG Sinha during his speech announced that more products from J&K are set to get a GI tag and appreciated the efforts of the SKUAST-J to bring experts of Geographical Indication, Intellectual Property Rights, experts, officials on a common platform to chalk out constraints and opportunities from the farmer’s and artisan’s perspective. The GI tagging of the products from Jammu and Kashmir in the recent past has led to local products of the Union Territory getting an international recognition. The GI tagging of more products is on the anvil. It could become a game changer for the rural economy. The GIs also have the potential to substantially extend wider benefits to rural areas while strengthening historical and cultural link between place and people. After August 5, 2019—when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status and bifurcated it into two Union Territories—nine products --Kani Shawl, Kashmir Pashmina, Kashmir Sozini Craft, Kashmir Papier-Macihe, Kashmir Walnut Wood Carving, Khatamband, Kashmiri Hand Knotted Carpets and Kashmir Saffron and Basmati -- have been issued GI tag to fight counter branding. In September 2022, the J&K administration had stated that a list of 12 more new crops had been submitted for the GI tag approval. The basic idea behind the GI tagging has been to enhance the income of farmers and artisans and provide international recognition to the J&K products. The GI tag is affixed with certain products that correspond to a specific geographical location or origin. Generally, the location or the place is historically reputed for an outstanding quality product. The tag denotes geographical genuineness and ensures native sourcing of the product. Jammu and Kashmir has been famous for the products that are either exclusively manufactured here or are only grown here. During the past three years the government has been trying to ensure that the local products of J&K reach the global markets so that their demand increases. The process to put more products in the GI tag list is on and in the coming days many more things will be done to achieve desired results. |
