Will Harsh Dev Singh revive Panthers Party? | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 16: While announcing his decision to resign from the AAP, Harsh Dev Singh said that he will revive the Panthers Party. The decision to revive the Panthers Party is expected to have significant implications for the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir in general and the Jammu region in particular. Singh is a well-known figure in the region, having served as a minister in the state government in the past. The Panthers Party, which was originally formed as a socialist and secular political party, has a long history of advocating for the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Its revival is expected to provide a much-needed alternative to the mainstream political parties that currently dominate the region. After the demise of Prof. Bhim Singh, Panthers Party has been wiped out from the political scene of Jammu and Kashmir. Panthers Party, which was founded by Prof Bhim Singh after saying goodbye to Congress in 1982, is the only regional party in the Jammu region. Although Panthers Party never emerges as a big force in the Jammu region like BJP and Congress, the party has a strong base in Udhampur district which is the home district of Prof Bhim Singh and other former leaders of the party. It was only in the year 2002, Panthers Party won an all-time high of four assembly seats in the house of 87. Before the death of Prof. Bhim Singh, almost all senior leaders deserted the party due to serious differences between former Minister Harsh Dev Singh and former MLA Balwant Singh Mankotia. Bhim Singh died on May 31, 2022 after a prolonged illness at Jammu. As reported earlier, before his demise Prof Bhim Singh helplessly witnessed the disintegration of the Panthers Party which he had floated in 1982. One of the oldest political parties of the J&K-Panthers Party is facing an identity crisis. On May 7, three-time MLA and former education minister Harsh Dev Singh joined the AAP in Delhi. Harsh Dev Singh is the chairman of the Panthers Party. Before joining Harsh Dev Singh, two former legislators of the party Balwant Singh Mankotia and Yash Paul Kundal have joined the party in New Delhi on April 10, 2022. Mankotia is a two-time MLA from Udhampur and resigned from the Panthers Party in February last year, citing a “family issue”. Kundal, another Panthers Party leader, is also a two-time MLA and former minister. Balwant Singh Mankotia has already joined BJP. |
