J&K BJP leaders to discuss property tax in Delhi | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 25: Even as the Bharatiya Janta Party leaders are evading questions over the prospective imposition of the property tax in Jammu and Kashmir, the JK leadership of the party is set to discuss the matter threadbare in the national capital. Sources said the BJP leaders have had a verbal discussion with their seniors in the national leadership and that it was resolved that the matter be brought to the notice of the union Home Minister Amit Shah in particular. Sources said a delegation of the party leaders from Jammu and Kashmir will be visiting the national capital for detailed meetings in the coming days. “If need arises they (BJP) leaders will also seek appointment with the honorable Prime Minister,” said a source privy to the deliberations. He said the party leadership from Jammu and Kashmir would apprise the national leadership “about the ground situation as also the prospective options for the imposition of the tax.” “Some options for the phased imposition of the tax will also be discussed because the BJP wants the issue be resolved in the larger interest of the nation and the people of Jammu and Kashmir alike,” said the source. Its pertinent to mention that the senior leaders of the BJP are evading questions of the imposition of the property tax. The government on February 23 said that Jammu and Kashmir is among the last states and union territories in the country to levy property taxes. Meanwhile the Chief Secretary Arun Kumar Mehta has sharply reacted to “misinformation created regarding property tax in Jammu and Kashmir.” He clarified that all the poor, marginalised having small houses having built-up area up to 1000 square feet have been exempted by the government from paying any property tax to be levied from April onwards this year. The spokesman said that during the meeting, it was informed that levy of property tax was essential part of urban sector reforms. The meeting was informed that J&K is one of the last states or union territories to levy property tax and non-imposition of the tax is depriving local bodies to become self-sustaining. “Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) are required to render multiple civic services in their jurisdiction and need resources. The levy of this tax will improve the financial health of these institutions and improve services, besides creating employment,” Chief Secretary said. |
