Rains lash plains, higher reaches receive snowfall in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Apr 18: Rains lashed plains and higher reaches received snowfall in Kashmir valley even as Meteorological Department predicts more precipitation on Tuesday.
Most parts of Kashmir valley received light to moderate intermittent rains and some higher reaches received snowfall during the past 24 hours while widespread light to moderate rain in the plains and snow on higher reaches is likely during the next 48 hours, the MeT office said.
It said during this wet spell thunderstorm with strong gusty winds with 20-30Kmph and Hailstorm are also possible at some places of J&K during April 18-19. Possibility of intermittent light to moderate rain at isolated places during April 19-21, the MeT office said and added weather likely to remain dry from April 22-25. Srinagar and its adjoining areas lashed by light to moderate rains resulting in considerable drop in temperature forcing people and tourists to wear warm clothes. It has been raining since morning at most places in the valley .
The Day temperature in most areas of Jammu and Kashmir is expected to remain below 4 ? 10 degree Celsius, said an independent weather observer Faizan Arif.
Regarding the rainfall, the MeT office said Srinagar received 6.9mm, Qazigund had 11.0mm of rainfall, Pahalgam 22.4mm, Kupwara 15.7mm, Kokernag 12.2mm and Gulmarg 2.1mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours till 0830hours Tuesday.
Srinagar recorded a low of 11.0 degree Celsius against 10.7 degree Celsius the previous night and it was 3.1 degree Celsius above normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during this period of the season.
Qazigund recorded a low of 9.8 degree Celsius against 8.8 degree Celsius which was 3.3 degree Celsius above normal at the gateway of Kashmir.
Tourist hot spot of Pahalgam recorded a low of 5.6 degree Celsius against 5.5 degree Celsius the previous night and it was 2.2 degree Celsius above normal.
Kokernag had a low of 9.3 degree Celsius, Kupwara 8.6 degree Celsius and ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a low of 3.6degree Celsius on Tuesday, the MeT office said.
