Approved by Centre 6-years ago new airport for Jammu still on papers

Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 18: Approved by the Centre nearly six years back the international airport for Jammu is still on the papers as statements nothing has been done on the ground.
Even higher-ups in the district administration of Samba where the new airport for international standards was ‘approved’ are not aware of the ‘dream’ project because they have not received any official communiqué to identify the land.
This airport was “approved” after the then PDP-BJP government had selected the Samba district for the construction of AIIMS.
Now the construction of AIIMS is going in full swing, but authorities are not aware of the status of the approved airport.
On December 21, 2017, the then Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh and BJP Lok Sabha member from Jammu-Poonch Jugal Kishore Sharma had announced that Centre had given its nod for a new international standards airport for Jammu region which will be constructed, most likely, in Samba district of Jammu province.
Both the BJP leaders had made this statement after meeting the then Civil Aviation Minister Gajapati Raju who according to them, was agreed to the demand for construction of a new airport of international standard for Jammu.
In the month of December 2017, it was also announced that a team from Civil Aviation Ministry would visit Jammu within days to finalize the land already identified by the state government at Samba district for the new airport.
Ironically it was also announced that details of the land identified as in Samba district for new airport would be submitted to the Civil Aviation Minister within a week’s time. After nod by the Civil Aviation team, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the new airport will be prepared and further work taken up.
The then Deputy Chief Minister and Lok Sabha members had made the announcement of new airport at Samba after the state government had identified land for construction of AIIMS in the same district.
On December 7, 2017 the then Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha had announced said three new airports would come up in J&K soon to increase air traffic.
On December 21, 2017, the then Dy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh and Lok Sabha member announced that Centre has approved new airport for Jammu at Samba.
On the very next day, the J&K unit of BJP had welcomed sanctioning of a new airport at Jammu.
