Narco-terrorism emerges as major threat | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 19: While the governments of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh have decided to form a joint force to tackle the interstate network of drug smugglers, authorities in J&K are still in deep slumber to tackle narco-terrorism. Like other northern states, J&K is virtually slipping into the tight grip of the drug mafia and parents are helplessly watching their teenage children dying slow deaths due to the failure of the authorities to crack down on the mafia well-connected with politicians and cops. “Except cosmetic exercises nothing effective has been done so far from the government side to eradicate this menace which is more dangerous than terrorism”, sources said, and added that convictions in narco-terrorism cases are very low in J&K. Shockingly, Pakistan and its notorious intelligence agency ISI are actively involved in smuggling narcotics on this side of the border through drones and infiltrators, authorities in J&K have yet not formulated any comprehensive policy to deal with this menace. Experts emphasized the need of devising a joint strategy with other northern states to tackle the inter-state drug mafia because J&K alone was not competent to deal with narcotic terrorism. The sensitive border state of J&K is gripped with narco-terrorism as the international drug mafia is smuggling drugs through the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB) to sell a small portion in this UT and the remaining consignment in the neighbouring northern states. Notable on April 9, 17 kilograms of heroin worth crores was recovered from the possession of Pakistan intruders who were captured alive by the Army troops near the Line of Control in the Poonch sector. One Pakistani infiltrator was killed while two others were captured alive near LoC in Poonch on April 9. In the search operation, three bags with fourteen packets of narcotics weighing approx 17 kilograms, Pakistan currency, some documents, and eatables have been recovered. During preliminary questioning, the two intruders who have been apprehended alive, have claimed that they (all three) are residents of Pakistan Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (POJK) and belong to Maidan Mohalla, village Chanjal. Drug addiction is not confined only to boys only, now this menace has also gripped girls also as cases of girls found involved in consuming drugs have increased manifold. |
