Political parties in quandary
4/21/2023 10:42:28 PM

Most of the political parties in Jammu and Kashmir have started believing that assembly elections in the Union Territory will be held after the 2024 Parliamentary polls.
As of date political parties have curtailed their activities in J&K and are making attempts to revive their connections with the people.
The last assembly elections in the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir State were held in 2014 after which PDP and BJP came together to form a coalition government.
However, in 2018, BJP pulled out from the PDP led dispensation leading to the fall of the government following which the Governor’s rule was imposed in J&K.
On August 5, 2019, the Centre announced its decision to revoke J&K’s special status and divided it into two Union Territories, J&K and Ladakh.
After the abrogation of Article 370 the political equations in Jammu and Kashmir have changed completely. Emergence of new political parties on the scene and redrawing of the parliamentary and assembly constituencies have brought political parties in Jammu and Kashmir divisions at par with each other.
Till 2014, when the last assembly elections were held in J&K, Kashmir based political parties had an edge over Jammu based political formations as assembly seats in Jammu region were less than Kashmir. For seventy years, Jammu based parties were treated as second fiddles or as junior partners in the government. However, in the changed set up Jammu and Kashmir regions have been brought at par with each other vis-à-vis distribution of the assembly seats. Now, Kashmir based political parties won’t be able to dictate terms.
As of date it appears that assembly elections in J&K can be deferred till 2024. Till then political parties have got enough time to reach out to the people and build their lost contacts. Kashmir based political parties can no more sell the slogans of autonomy and self rule. Politicians will have to convince the people that they would live upto their expectations and work towards providing good governance.
During the past three years the Centre has been handling J&K affairs directly. It has set new benchmarks of governance and whenever politicians come into power they will have to ensure that they maintain the same standards of governance that have been set.
For time being they can reach out to people and build connections till assembly elections are held in J&K.
