Mind body axis helps in regulation of Cardiovascular health : Dr Sushil | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 23: Laying emphasis on the need to understand the relation of mind-body axis in relation to cardiovascular diseases and its prevention through spiritual and religious healing Head Department of Cardiology GMCH Jammu Dr Sushil Sharma held a day long cardiac Awareness cum health Check up camp on the occasion of 7th foundation day of Sarv Shakti Chandi Mata Mandir , Dhammi Nagrota Jammu with the main aim of educating the ever growing importance of mind body practices and spirituality in reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with cardiovascular diseases so that the same message is conveyed to the younger generations to come. More than 800 people were screened, evaluated, diagnosed and free medicines were given as per the requirements. While Interacting with the people Dr Sushil Stated that Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) currently account for one in three deaths worldwide .The risk of developing CVDs is highly influenced by lifestyle-related factors such as a high consumption of unhealthy food, physical inactivity, tobacco use, and harmful use of alcohol. These disadvantageous health behaviours are becoming more prevalent in LMICs due to elevated exposures and limited preventive services. He maintained that Religious and spiritual (R/S) affiliations may be an underlying factor for CVD risk variations. R/S affiliations play an important role and these beliefs are known to shape one’s view of the world and behavioural patterns and therefore have potential to both positively and negatively affect one’s health . Positive aspects include encouragement to live healthily, provision of mechanisms to regulate stress, and contribution to building a social support network ..This could be the result of discouragement of alcohol consumption and smoking or encouragement by religious leaders to be physically active . He further added that Unfavourable interactions with fellow members and religious doubts or discontent can induce increased psychological stress levels, which is a known risk factor for CVDs . These health behaviours can influence cardio metabolic conditions and subsequently CVD risk. Spirituality is more related to one’s emotional self-regulation, which could lead to less stress and therefore lower chances of developing cardio metabolic conditions and CVDs. Support from social networks can also influence this emotional self-regulation, He said. Dr Sushil in his Concluding remarks told that meditation and spirituality is believed to be efficacious in reducing sympathetic activity, lowering cortisol levels and reducing negative behavioral activity. Studies have shown that in addition to decreasing CV mortality, the beneficial effects of meditation improve conditions such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and high cortisol levels. However, future studies on the effects of meditation on health are essential to establish a nonbiased view of this emerging landscape.
