Azad’s party at brink | | | When former J&K chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said goodbye to the Congress and floated his own party Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) his loyalists made a beeline and joined him. But the Congress rebel leaders couldn’t stick to their mentor and left his party as soon as the senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi arrived with his Bharat Jodo Yatra in J&K. The rebels apologized and rejoined their parent party, but since the day they have gone back they have been struggling to regain the respect and their lost places in the party. On the other hand the DPAP is also facing its share of problems as the people are joining and then leaving the party. Azad seems to be finding it hard to keep his flock together as his leftover supporters are exploring possibilities to rejoin the Congress party. Expulsion of former legislator Haji Abdul Rashid from the primary membership of the party for alleged anti-party activities is a clear indication that all is not well in Azad’s party. However, Azad has downplayed the exit of his members and has always reiterated that the party floated by him is there to stay. It seems that prevailing political uncertainty in Jammu and Kashmir has made the politicians restless. They are uncertain about their future and are unsure about which party to choose. Leaders who had made a beeline after Azad were under the impression that the former J&K chief minister would emerge as a new power centre in the Union Territory and they would once again get an opportunity to come close to power corridors. For the past eight months Azad has been trying to build his party and it appears that he is also one among all the leaders who are trying to regain their lost ground in Jammu and Kashmir. As of date no politician is sure about when the assembly elections will be held in Jammu and Kashmir and which party will come into power. The DPAP is presently focusing on reaching out to the people and chances of Azad becoming a power centre in J&K look bleak. Ones who will want to stick with him and the ones who get better opportunities will leave. |
