Srinagar, May 4: Security forces shot dead two newly recruited militants of Lashkar-e-Taiba in a gun battle in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district on Thursday morning, police said. This was the second gunfight in Kashmir in less than 24 hours. The fresh gunfight broke out at Wanigam Kreeri area Baramulla during a cordon and a search operation which was launched following an input about militant presence. " As the forces cordoned the suspected spot, the hiding terrorists opened fire triggering a gunfight. In the operation two terrorists were killed," a security official said. Additional Director General of Police, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar identified the slain as Shakir Majid Najar and Hanan Ahmad Seh from Shopian district who were associated with LeT. "Both joined terrorism in the month of March 2023," he said Police said incriminating materials, arms and ammunition including an AK 47 rifle and a pistol were recovered. On Wednesday, two unidentified militants were killed as security forces foiled an infiltration bid in north Kashmir's Kupwara district. Security forces are on an alert in the entire union territory as Kashmir is gearing to host G20 meet in Srinagar later this month. The G20 meeting in Kashmir will be the first major international event in J&K since August 5, 2019, when the erstwhile state was divided into two UTs - J&K and Ladakh - and its special status was revoked. Security agencies have decided to deploy Marine Commandos (MARCOS) and National Security Guard (NSG) of the Army to secure the high profile meet. |
