After fake Twitter accounts, authorities scanning over 3500 social media groups | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 14: After getting a number of fake Twitter accounts blocked for allegedly spreading rumours about the prevailing situation in J&K, security agencies are scanning over 3500 Facebook and Whatsapp pages for fueling unrest and violence through social media. These social media groups are glorifying terror attacks that were executed by terrorists in Poonch and Rajouri in the month of April and May. Reports said that after two back-to-back terror attacks in the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri in which ten soldiers attained martyrdom, pictures were uploaded from some social media accounts. Pictures of these attacked by uploaded and later shared by some groups. “Security agencies are scanning messages and videos earlier uploaded on these groups from inside and outside the country”, a source said, adding, “most of the messages and videos on these pages were uploaded from across the border and shared by some locals”. Earlier Central government had written to Twitter to block "fake" accounts for allegedly spreading rumours about the prevailing situation in the erstwhile state after the abrogation of Article 370. Following written complaint by the government, the micro-blogging site had suspended some Twitter handles indulged in spreading rumours about prevailing situation in the Valley. “After getting some Twitter accounts blocked, we are working to scan a number of Facebook and Whatsapp groups spreading fake news to instigate people of J&K, especially of Valley”, a source said and revealed that administrators of majority of such groups were from Pakistan. “Although internet has been snapped in J&K, still fake videos are being posted on these social media pages from across the border to spread misinformation in the Valley and glorifying terror attacks”, source said, adding, “Security agencies are identifying members of these social media groups who are sharing these fake videos and spreading misinformation campaign”. Sources said these groups were indulged into pursuing separatist causes, glorifying slain terrorists, radicalizing young impressionable minds, and mobilizing youth to come to the streets in the Valley after minor incidents. |
