agencies NEW DELHI, June 1: NHPC Limited, a Government of India Enterprise, and Vidhyut Utpadan Company Limited (VUCL) of Nepal exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development of the Phukot Karnali Hydro Electric Project (480MW) in Nepal. The MoU ceremony took place in the presence of Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of Nepal Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' at Hyderabad House, New Delhi. NHPC Limited, known as a premier organization in India for hydropower development, and VUCL, responsible for large-scale hydropower projects in Nepal, have joined forces to undertake this project under the India-Nepal Joint Vision on Power Sector Cooperation. The Phukot Karnali Hydro Electric Project aims to generate power using the flow of the Karnali River, which will be integrated into Nepal's power system. The project will have an installed capacity of 480 MW, with an average annual generation of approximately 2448 GWh. It will feature a 109-meter-high RCC dam and an underground power house accommodating six turbines of 79 MW each. Additionally, a surface power house with a capacity of 6 MW, consisting of two machines of 3 MW each, is planned to minimize environmental impact. The project follows a Peaking Run-of-River (PRoR) type scheme. |
