After opposition’s Patna conclave Farooq becomes “over-offensive” against Centre | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 1: “Tough” stand taken by National Conference president Dr. Farooq Abdullah against the proposal of the BJP-led NDA government to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is an indication that he became over-offensive to opposing policies of the Centre. For the first time, Dr. Farooq Abdullah has given a threatening statement against the Centre. The former Chief Minister is usually known for avoiding confrontation with Delhi but it is for the first time that he has threatened the Union Government. Dr. Farooq Abdullah on Thursday cautioned the Centre against taking any unilateral decision on this issue. He said the Centre should not push through with the Uniform Civil Code and rethink the consequences of implementing it. He asked the Centre to give a second thought to the proposal of implementing the Uniform Civil Code. “This is a diverse nation, people of different races and religions live here and Muslims have their own Shariah law,”, he argued. “India is a diverse country where people of all religions, caste, creed, and faith live together. Before implementing Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the Centre should think about everyone before going ahead with the proposal”, he said. He further said that the government should think and rethink the consequences of implementing the UCC. They should keep all this under consideration and instead of pushing it through, they should think of the consequences”, he cautioned. Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law, and Justice, will seek the views of all stakeholders on the issue of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in its meeting on July 3. Chairman of the Committee Sushil Modi recently said that the meeting of the committee is non-political as the panel has members from all political parties. “We will discuss the Law Commission's report on the UCC on July 3. If required, we will call another meeting to discuss the matter further. The committee is completely neutral,” he said. According to the schedule of the standing committee, the panel will hear the views of representatives of the law panel and legal affairs and legislative departments of the law ministry on a public notice issued by the Law Commission of India on June 14, 2023, inviting views from the various stakeholders on the Uniform Civil Code under the subject 'Review of Personal Laws'. |
