3,500 social media groups under security scanner | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 9: After identifying some Twitter accounts involved in spreading rumours in the Union Territory, security agencies are scanning over 3,500 Facebook and Whatsapp pages with the potential to fuel unrest and violence in the Valley through social media. “Security agencies are scanning messages and videos earlier uploaded on these groups from inside and outside the country,” a source said, adding, “most of the messages and videos on these pages were uploaded from across the border and shared by some locals”. Recently some Over Ground Workers (OGWs) were detained by the security agencies for their involvement in spreading rumours. Last month the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday conducted a series of raids across four districts of Kashmir as part of its offensive against newly floated terror outfits. The raids were conducted at twelve places in Kashmir Valley as part of its continuing investigations into the conspiracy of the newly-floated offshoots of proscribed Pakistan-backed terrorist outfits to destabilize J&K. Twelve locations in the four districts of Kulgam, Bandipora, Shopian, and Pulwama were raided as part of today's crackdown. The locations were residential premises of hybrid terrorists and Over Ground Workers linked (OGWs) with the newly-formed offshoots and affiliates of the banned terrorist outfits. Investigations have revealed that Pak-based operatives were using social media platforms to promote terror. The organizations, supported by their masters in Pakistan, have been conspiring to commit acts of terror and violence, by radicalizing local youth and mobilizing overground workers, to disturb peace and communal harmony in J&K. Security agencies are working to scan a number of Facebook and Whatsapp groups spreading fake news to instigate people of J&K, especially in the Valley. The administrators of a majority of such groups were from Pakistan. “Security agencies are identifying members of these social media groups who are sharing these fake videos and spreading misinformation campaigns.” |
