NC gives a miss to ‘Sher controversy’; PDP, CPI-M react | Mudayee Sust, Gawah Chust! | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 16: Even as the Jammu and Kashmir administration on August 13 dropped the so called title of ‘Sher’, a reference to National Conference founder Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah from the name of the convention centre located on the banks of the Dal Lake in Srinagar, the NC preferred silence on the issue. While a section of media carried the news that until Saturday, official communications referred to the ‘Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre’ (SKICC), which on August 13 was termed ‘Kashmir International Convention Centre’ (KICC), the NC didn’t react. Interestingly, while the Peoples Democratic Party and a Left party reacted to the development, the NC remained silent. Former minister and PDP leader Naeem Akhter took to the social media to raise the issue. “Irony: Sheikh Saheb was the first Kashmiri to raise Tiranga alongside Nehru. And they chose Tiranga rally to drop his name. And it’s not by chance. L-G office’s communiqué drops the ‘Sher’ from Srinagar’s Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre,” Akhter said on his social media handle. CPI (M) leader M Y Tarigami reacting on same reportedly said that removing the title reflects that the government is more serious about obliterating the history of J&K than addressing the pressing issues like unemployment, health care, price rise and other such problems. The official statement pertaining to the flagging off of the ‘Tiranga Yatra’ in Srinagar, had KICC mentioned in it several times, instead of SKICC. After reading down of Article 370, the UT administration cancelled the public holiday on December 5 commemorating the birth anniversary of Sheikh Abdullah. Abdullah’s mention was also dropped from the State Police awards. The NC, however, didn’t react to the recent development letting the rumor mills go rife many saying that “May be the grand old party of Kashmir doesn’t want to rake up another controversy with the Bharatiya Janta Party, so they want to give it a miss.” A political opinion maker said “NC is into introspection and doesn’t want to go ahead with the hoax of Sher.” Despite repeated attempts the NC leader couldn’t be contacted for comments. |
