Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 27: The Department of Strategic and Regional Studies (DSRS) at the University of Jammu organized a talk on the occasion of the 76th Accession Day of Jammu and Kashmir. The event took place in the seminar hall of the department and was chaired by Maj. Gen. (Retd.) Goverdhan Singh Jamwal, a war veteran of the Indian Army.
The panel of experts for the discussion included Brig. (Retd.) Dr. Vijay Sagar Dheman from the International Institute of J&K Studies and Analysis and Shri Ranjan Chauhan from the Jammu and Kashmir Study Center (JKSC). Prof. Virender Koundal, Director of DSRS, welcomed the speakers and other dignitaries and introduced the theme of the discussion in his opening remarks.
Ranjan Chauhan used his talk to dispel several myths about Jammu and Kashmir and presented his arguments. He emphasized that the Maharaja of J&K never intended to remain independent and was always in favor of Jammu and Kashmir's accession to India. Chauhan elaborated on the process of accession and the constitutional procedures involved in it, likening it to the process adopted by other princely states in India.
Brig. Vijay Sagar Dheman discussed the role of the British Government in the partition of India and presented a geopolitical perspective with his presentation titled 'British Game in J&K.' Brig. Dheman also mentioned a few incidents of wars fought between the Indian Army and the Pakistani Army in 1947.
Maj. Gen. (Retd.) Goverdhan Singh Jamwal provided a detailed account of the events surrounding the accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India. Gen. Goverdhan, who witnessed all four wars fought between India and Pakistan, shared his experiences regarding the invasion of Jammu and Kashmir by the Pakistani Army in 1947. He also showed a video clip and explained the battle tactics adopted by the Indian Army.
Dr. Mohd. Monir Alam, Senior Assistant Professor at DSRS, hosted the event, and the vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Ganesh Malhotra. The program was attended by Colonel J.P. Singh, faculty from various departments of Jammu University, members of civil society, journalists, research scholars, and postgraduate students. The event provided a platform for a comprehensive discussion on the historical events surrounding the accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India.
