Institute of Mountain Environment Marks International Mountain Day at Bhaderwah Campus | | | Early Times Report
Bhaderwah, Dec 11: In a commemorative event at Bhaderwah Campus, the Institute of Mountain Environment observed International Mountain Day (IMD) on December 11, 2023, with the theme 'Restoring Mountain Ecosystems.' The celebration aimed to raise awareness about the significance of mountain ecosystems and advocate for sustainable development and conservation efforts. Prof. Rahul Gupta, Rector, Bhaderwah Campus, welcomed the attendees and commended the Institute for its commitment to academic excellence, research, and scientific outreach in the Himalayan region. He emphasized the importance of the event as a catalyst for ongoing efforts in mountain conservation and sustainable development. Dr. Neeraj Sharma, Convener of IMD-23, introduced the theme, highlighting the critical role mountains play in the global ecosystem. Mountains cover 27% of the Earth's land surface and host nearly half of the world's biodiversity hotspots. Emphasis on the impact of climate change and unsustainable development on mountain ecosystems, leading to increased risks for people and the planet. Dr. Chhering Tandup stressed the significance of mountains, addressing the challenges and concerns facing these ecosystems on local and global scales. Advocated for the shared responsibility to maintain and safeguard mountain environments. Researchers from the Institute of Mountain Environment presented key findings. Dr. Dinesh Baloria discussed floristic diversity in alpine areas, while Vandana Dutt and Asha Sohil focused on aquatic resources. Ajaz Ansari and Nitika Khullar covered mammalian diversity in higher elevations. The event extended to Little Angels School Bhaderwah Campus, involving students from various departments. Prizes were distributed to winners of the poster-making and declamation contests. Rajpratima Singh Thakur and Aria Arun claimed titles in poster-making and declamation, respectively. Sundus and Nakshatra secured second and first runner-up positions in poster-making. Muneef Ahmed and Kashif Hafiz were recognized as second and first runner-up in the declamation contest. The celebration marked a collective effort to raise awareness about the importance of mountains and underscored the need for sustainable practices and conservation to ensure the resilience of these vital ecosystems. |
