Cong silent; Karan Singh hails verdict | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 11: Even as party leadership preferred to maintain a guarded silence, Congress stalwart Dr. Karan Singh, who is the son of the last ruler of the erstwhile princely state of Jammu and Kashmir Maharaja Hari Singh, hailed the “historic” verdict of the Supreme Court on Article 370. While welcoming the decision of the Apex Court to uphold the abrogation of articles 370 and 35-A, Dr. Karan Singh urged everyone to accept the inevitable. Dr Karan Singh’s father Maharaja Hari Singh had signed the “Instrument of Accession” in 1947 to accede the then princely state of Jammu and Kashmir to the Union of India. Without naming some Valley-based parties, Singh admitted that some groups are not happy with the verdict of the Supreme Court but he advised such elements to accept the reality. “A section of people in J&K who will not be happy with this judgment, my sincere advice is that they should accept the inevitable and they should accept the fact that now this has been done and the Supreme Court has upheld the action and therefore there’s no point now unnecessarily hitting their head against the wall,” Dr. Karan Singh said while interacting with a section of media. Quoting some lines of the Supreme Court’s verdict, Karan Singh urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to restore statehood as early as possible to fulfill the demand of the people. The veteran politician, who was the former Sadr-e-Rasayat of Jammu and Kashmir, asked all political parties to start preparations for the next assembly elections. “Instead of unnecessarily wasting their energy on opposing decision of the Supreme Court political parties should focus on coming elections in J&K”, he said. He further demanded that statehood should be granted before announcing assembly elections. “J&K is called as ‘Crown of India’ but it has been downgraded to UT”, he said. Meanwhile, Congress leadership maintained silence over the Supreme Court’s verdict on Article 370. The party, however, Congress said that it shall continue its struggle for safeguarding the rights of the people of J&K especially the rights of the land and job, apart from seeking immediate restoration of statehood, without any further delay, in any case before holding of assembly elections. |
