Kashmir based parties struggle to find footing in ‘Naya J&K’ | ‘To bridge growing disconnect, find a place in changed terrain big challenges’ | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 15: Growing disconnect between traditional Kashmir based political parties and the people has created a void. According to the analysts the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019 and Supreme Court upholding the Centre’s decision has irrevocably altered the political landscape, leaving traditional parties struggling to find their footing in ‘Naya Jammu and Kashmir.’ A political commentator while talking to Early Times said, “For decades, Kashmiri politics revolved around autonomy, self-rule and other issues. Parties like the National Conference and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) built their arguments on these issues.” He said, “Their rhetoric led to people believing that these parties can do anything. However, the tectonic shift brought about by Article 370's abrogation has left these parties scrambling to redefine their relevance.” A political commentator said, “Old playbooks of autonomy, self-rule promises and grievance politics are not working anymore. People are looking for concrete solutions to everyday problems, not grand pronouncements on distant issues." “Indeed, the narrative of Kashmiri politics seems to be shifting from political rhetoric to issues like economic development, job creation, and improved governance. Many people feel disconnected from parties focusing primarily on the abrogation issue, perceiving them as stuck in a loop of political nostalgia,” he added. An observer said that compounding this disconnect is the perception of a weakened voice. “Post-abrogation of Article 370, Kashmir based politicians are finding it hard to put their act together. Leaders of major political parties have not been able to keep their flock together. “ "Politicians seem subdued, almost invisible. People don't see them addressing pressing issues which touch the skin of a common man,” he said, adding, “The rise of new political groups, often with a focus on local issues and development has emerged as another challenge for these parties. These new formations are tapping the growing disillusionment with established parties, offering an alternative narrative that resonates with specific communities or concerns.” According to the analysts the road to regaining relevance remains long and arduous. “Rebuilding trust with a disillusioned electorate, navigating a changed political landscape, and offering concrete solutions to pressing issues are just some of the hurdles these parties have to overcome. To bridge the growing disconnect and find a place in this changed terrain are big challenges for Kashmir based parties,” said an analyst. |
