Suspense continues over Assembly elections in J&K | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 13: The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir remains in suspense over the maiden Assembly elections as the Election Commission has yet to announce the dates for the much-anticipated assembly elections. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar on Wednesday said that the polls will be conducted at the “appropriate time,” taking into account security considerations and the concurrent elections being held in the region. In response to queries during a press conference on election preparedness and schedules for simultaneous Assembly and Lok Sabha elections in J&K, CEC Rajiv Kumar emphasized that the security situation would be a crucial factor in determining the election timing for Jammu and Kashmir. “The decision will be made at the right moment, considering the security context and other simultaneous elections in the region,” stated the CEC. The CEC further said that he would discuss all aspects with the security agencies and political before taking a final call on holding simultaneous polls in J&K. “We are keeping a close watch on the situation regarding Lok Sabha and Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir,” CEC Rajiv Kumar said during a media interaction in Jammu. He said that representatives of many political, who met the visiting team of the Election Commission of India, have strongly advocated for holding Assembly and Lok Sabha polls simultaneously. However, the final decision will be based on a comprehensive security review and discussions with political stakeholders. “Our priority remains to conduct early Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in J&K”, he said. The electoral process underwent a special summary revision in 2022, culminating in the publication of the final electoral rolls in the Union Territory on November 25, 2022. Efforts for continuous updates are ongoing, allowing eligible citizens who were previously left out of the electoral roll to apply through various registration modes, including online platforms like the NVSP portal, Voter Helpline APP, Voter Portal, or offline applications to the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO). The completion of this comprehensive exercise will pave the way for holding elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Notably, this will be the first election in the UT following the abrogation of Article 370 and the subsequent bifurcation of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories by the BJP-led NDA government in August 2019. |
