Jammu, Apr 28: Although BJP is confident of retaining both the Lok Sabha seats of Jammu province, party leaders are worried over low turn-out in urban assembly constituencies of Jammu district. After 2014, the BJP has expanded its footprints in rural areas of Jammu province but urban areas are still citadels of the Saffron Party. While the newly carved Shri Mata Vaishno Devi assembly constituency recorded the highest 79.04 percent polling, the urban assembly segment Bahu, which was crafted after the delimitation, recorded the lowest 62.34 percent polling. Comprising Gandhi Nagar, Trikuta Nagar, Channi Himmat, and other posh localities Bahu Assembly segment is considered a stronghold of the BJP, and the lowest voting in this segment is a matter of concern for the party. Jammu East, which has been a citadel of the BJP since the days of Praja Parishad and Jan Sangh, recorded 65.98 percent polling. Similarly, the newly carved out Jammu North Assembly segment recorded 67.38 percent polling. The Jammu West, which has emerged as a stronghold of the Saffron Brigade, has 62.82 percent polling. Sources said that BJP leadership is confident of retaining both the Lok Sabha comfortably. “Low turnout in the urban constituencies is the result of the over-confidence party workers who took the voters far-granted”, a senior leader told the Early Times. Wishing anonymity the same leader said that instead of mobilizing voters on the day of voting the over-confident workers preferred to sit outside the polling booths in their respective areas. Sources said that the lower turnout in the urban constituencies would prove counterproductive for the party in the next assembly elections in the Union Territory. |
