Beware of fake calls: Public warned against scammers impersonating authorities
5/2/2024 10:08:21 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 2: In a recent alarming incident, an elderly citizen residing in the region received a distressing call from an unknown individual claiming to be an authority figure. The caller, allegedly from Pakistan, falsely asserted that the recipient's younger grandson was implicated in a serious criminal case.
The deceptive caller, posing as a law enforcement officer, coerced the concerned grandparent into believing that their grandson was involved in a heinous crime. Moreover, the scammer went to the extent of arranging a conversation between the grandparent and a person purportedly being the grandson, referring to them affectionately as "Dada ji."
Thankfully, the vigilant grandparent swiftly reported the matter to local authorities, including the SHO (Station House Officer) of Gangyal and Greater Kailash. Following thorough investigation, authorities confirmed the call to be a malicious hoax, aimed at exploiting the vulnerable emotions of the family.
It is suspected that the caller's motive was to instill fear and distress in the grandparent, possibly for financial gain or other nefarious purposes. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of fraudulent schemes, especially those targeting the elderly and emotionally vulnerable.
Law enforcement agencies urge the public to remain vigilant and cautious when receiving unexpected calls, especially those claiming to be from authoritative sources. They emphasize the importance of verifying the authenticity of such communications before divulging any personal information or succumbing to demands.
This incident underscores the necessity for heightened awareness and caution among the populace. By staying informed and alert, individuals can protect themselves and their loved ones from falling victim to such deceitful tactics.
Authorities advise promptly reporting any suspicious calls or activities to local law enforcement agencies to prevent further exploitation and ensure community safety. Together, through awareness and proactive measures, we can thwart the efforts of scammers and safeguard our communities against such malicious schemes.
