Jammu, May 11: The decision of the political leaders of Kargil to oppose the candidature of Congress candidate Tsering Namgyal has created a divide between Kargil and Leh. This division between regions is likely to affect the agitation for statehood and the sixth schedule. Highly placed sources said that leaders of the Leh, especially those belonging to the Congress party, are not happy with the adamant stand taken by the political groups of Kargil to oppose the candidature of Tsering Namgyal who is also an active member of the Leh Apex Body. Notable, Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance are jointly agitating to grant statehood and sixth schedule to the Ladakh. Furthermore, the statehood of the KDA Sajjad Kargili has further created differences because he has demanded the merger of Ladakh with the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Meanwhile, amidst the escalating tensions between the communally-sensitive Leh and Kargil districts, the 66-day-long climate fast, led by Sonam Wanghcuk, an engineer-turned-education reformer, advocating for safeguards for the fragile ecology and unique culture of the arid region, has been temporarily suspended. This decision aims to ensure a smooth Lok Sabha poll process for the lone Ladakh Lok Sabha seat scheduled for May 20. Wangchuk conveyed in a video message that the pause in the fast is temporary and not permanent. Over 70,000 people participated in the climate fast, initiated after unsuccessful talks between Ladakh leaders and the Ministry of Home Affairs. With the elections approaching, they chose to refrain from directly influencing the parliamentary process. Their objective was to raise awareness among the people, which they successfully achieved. The climate fast and protests were launched in response to the alleged failure of the BJP government at the Centre to fulfill its promises of granting Sixth Schedule status to the region. In the BJP’s 2019 Lok Sabha election manifesto for Ladakh Constituency, the party had pledged the declaration of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Meanwhile, Sajjad Kargili, a senior leader of the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), withdrew his nomination papers from the Ladakh seat in support of independent candidate Haji Hanifa Jan. He questioned the Congress manifesto's stance on statehood for Ladakh, highlighting the region's longstanding demand for statehood. Kargili expressed discontent with the current Union Territory (UT) setup and advocated for either granting Ladakh statehood or considering its merger with Jammu and Kashmir. He emphasized the dissatisfaction prevailing across Ladakh due to the UT status. On May 6, the entire Kargil unit of the National Conference announced mass resignations in protest against the pressure to support the Congress candidate for the Ladakh Lok Sabha seat. Haji Hanifa Jan, formerly the district president of NC, is now running as an independent candidate, supported by various religious, social, and political groups in Kargil.
