SKUAST-J imparts training on 'Processing of Vegetables into Value Added Products'

JAMMU, June 3: Division of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Management, SKUAST-Jammu in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi organized one day training programme on "Processing of Vegetables into Value Added Products" under DST funded project entitled, "Documentation, Revival and Upscaling of Indigenous Knowledge Systems for Scientific Development in Pir Panjal and Shivalik ranges of UT of Jammu and Kashmir" here today at Karua village in Reasi distt. of J&K which was attended by a number of rural women of area. The programme was organised under the dynamic leadership of Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. B.N. Tripathi, able guidance of Director Research, Prof.SK Gupta and Director Extension, Prof.Amrish Vaid of SKUAST-J. Dr.Rakesh Sharma, Professor, SKUAST-J spoke on the significance of value addition in fruits and vegetables and discussed on women empowerment through SHGs formation. He expressed that fruits and vegetables processing have immense scope in hilly areas and the women farmers can generate extra income and employment for their livelihood. Dr. Anil Bhat, Assistant Professor, AEABM and Principal Investigator of the project explained briefly about the mandate of the project. He advised rural women to concentrate on quality of the value added product and assured them to provide assistance for marketing and branding of their products. Dr. Julie D Bandral, Professor, PHM and Co-Principal Investigator of the Project gave detailed demonstration for making value added products of vegetables. She also discussed on the nutritional significance of fruits and vegetables and their potential into processing. She elaborated the scientific techniques of processing of fruits and vegetables and stressed on the preparation of bottle gourd products, turmeric products, apple jam, aonla candy, pickles, juice etc. by elaborating their scientific preparation. She also discussed about the ingredients used in the value added products of fruits and vegetables to increase their shelf life. Earlier Dr.Banarsi Lal, Sr.Scientist & Head, warmly welcomed the participants and explained the importance of value addition in seasonal fruits and vegetables to fetch more returns. He urged the participants to avail the benefits of training and start agri-entrepreneurships in rural areas. He motivated the participants for the processing of fruits and vegetables by which they can generate more money. He stressed on SHGs/FPOs formation. During the programme, participants asked certain quarries which the scientists answered in a satisfactorily way. Sh. Rohit Kumar, Project Associates of the project was also present during the programme. The programme was assisted by Sh.Manohar Lal and Sh.Mohd.Iqbal and concluded by Dr.Anil Bhat with formal vote of thanks.
