Jammu, May 3: Chief Election Commissioner of India, Rajiv Kumar on Monday said that residents of Jammu and Kashmir are ready to decide their future democratically.
Pointing toward the overwhelming participation of people in the just concluded Lok Sabha elections in the Union Territory, Rajiv Kumar said that during the election we have seen an urge in the eyes of the voters of Jammu and Kashmir who wanted to decide their future through the electoral battle.
The crowd has a desire to participate in the democratic process to decide their future.
Recalling the visit of the team of the Election Commission of India on March 12 and 13, Rajiv Kumar said that people asked us when assembly elections will be held in Jammu and Kashmir. At that time we told the people that assembly elections would be the appropriate time.
Rajiv Kumar said that the appropriate time has come and we will build on this foundation to further strengthen democratic institutions in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Election Commission of India made an important announcement on Monday, stating that it is fully prepared to conduct assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir. Notably, the Union Territory witnessed the highest voter turnout in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in the last four decades.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar provided an overview of the marathon seven-phase 2024 general elections, which concluded on June 1. He emphasized the commission’s readiness to hold assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir.
In the Lok Sabha polls held in 2024, Jammu and Kashmir recorded an impressive overall voter turnout of 58.58%. Additionally, the Kashmir Valley saw a turnout of 51.05%. Importantly, there were no major incidents reported during the polls across the country, including in Jammu and Kashmir.
Earlier on May 25 and May 27 CEC Rajiv Kumar announced imminent assembly polls in the Union Territory to bolster the democratic process.
In an official handout issued by the Election Commission of India on May 27, the CEC made it clear that the active participation of the people of J&K in the Lok Sabha elections is a huge positive for upcoming assembly elections in the UT of J&K.
