Jammu, Nov 9: With just six MLAs in its kitty, the Congress leadership is trying to get one Rajya Sabha seat from the National Conference to increase its strength in the Upper House of the Parliament. Highly placed sources said that after denying a ministerial berth in Omar Abdullah’s council of ministers, the Congress is now mounting pressure on the National Conference to give at least one Rajya Sabha seat to the party from Jammu and Kashmir. “It is yet not confirmed whether the National Conference leadership would accept the demand of the Congress, but over half a dozen party leaders are hoping to be accommodated in the Upper House of the Parliament with the help of the coalition partner”, sources said. National Conference supremo Farooq Abdullah is likely to be nominated to Rajya Sabha while BJP may send one of its senior leaders to the Upper House. The last Rajya Sabha polls in the erstwhile state were held in 2015 and the four seats have remained vacant since 2021 after the elected members completed their six-year tenures. In the Assembly polls held after a decade in Jammu and Kashmir, the National Conference won 42 seats, Congress six, BJP 29, PDP three and one each by the People's Conference, CPI-M, and AAP. Seven independents also emerged victorious. |
