Process to equip VDGs with modern arms to be expedited
11/9/2024 11:27:37 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 9: After the martyrdom of two Village Defence Guards (VDGs) in the Kuntwara forest of Kishtwar district, the Home Ministry has expedited the process of equipping these members with modern weapons. Although the process of providing modern weapons to the VDG members has been ongoing for the last six months, it will be further accelerated after terror attacks in the mountain districts of Doda and Kishtwar.
Sources said that before equipping VDG members with sophisticated weapons, they will impart special training by the different security agencies including the Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police in different areas.
As reported earlier, the government has decided to equip VDGs with advanced weapons and their remuneration will be increased. The government is taking significant steps to boost the capabilities of VDGs in Jammu and Kashmir.
To combat the growing threat of terrorism, the government plans to replace the outdated .303 rifles used by VDGs with modern Self Loading Rifles (SLRs). This move aims to enhance their effectiveness in countering terror threats, particularly in light of recent attacks.
The government recognized the need to upgrade VDGs' arms to match the sophisticated weapons used by terrorists, such as M4 Carbines and assault rifles.
All VDGs will receive a monthly stipend, with group leaders getting Rs 4500 and other members receiving Rs 4000.
The number of VDGs is rising, with 4985 sanctioned and 4153 actively serving, particularly in area

like Udhampur, Doda, Kishtwar Reasi, Rajouri, and Poonch.
These efforts demonstrate the government's commitment to strengthening the VDGs and enhancing their ability to protect their communities.
Reports said that the government is planning to replace the outdated .303 rifles currently used by VDGs with modern Self Loading Rifles (SLRs). This move aims to strengthen their ability to combat terror threats effectively, especially in light of recent terror attacks.
All VDGs will now receive a monthly honorarium. The Union Home Ministry will cover the entire cost under the Security Related Expenditure (SRE) of Jammu and Kashmir. Previously, 4985 VDGs were sanctioned, with 4153 actively serving. This number is rising due to increased security efforts in areas like Udhampur, Doda, Reasi, Rajouri, and Poonch.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), in consultation with the Jammu and Kashmir Government, has decided that group leaders will receive Rs 4500, and other members will receive Rs 4000 per month. These payments will be directly deposited into their bank accounts.
Recognizing the challenge posed by terrorists armed with M4 Carbines and assault rifles, the Jammu and Kashmir Government and BJP leaders prioritize the gradual modernization of VDGs’ weaponry. Some VDGs have already received SLRs, and others will follow suit in phases.
Two unarmed Village Defence Group (VDG) guards were kidnapped and later martyred by terrorists in the Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday evening.
