Jammu, Nov 22: Hundreds of people took to the streets in Ladakh on Friday to condemn the recent targeted killings of Shias in the Parachinar area of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The protests, led by religious leaders, civil society organizations, and students, were marked by fiery speeches, placards denouncing sectarian violence, and calls for justice. Parachinar, located in Pakistan's tribal belt near the Afghan border, has been the site of several violent attacks on the Shia minority in recent years. The latest killings, reportedly carried out by extremist groups, have sparked outrage across the region, including in Ladakh, home to a significant Shia population. In Kargil, large processions began at religious institutes and made their way through the town’s streets, with protesters chanting slogans against sectarian violence and urging the international community to intervene. Demonstrators held banners reading, "Stop the Killing of Innocents" and "Shias Demand Justice in Parachinar." Addressing the crowd, prominent religious leaders, condemned the targeted violence in Pakistan. "The Shia community is being systematically attacked in Parachinar while the world watches in silence. We will not stand by as our brethren suffer such atrocities," they said. They also urged the Indian government to raise the issue on international platforms. "As a nation that stands for peace and harmony, India should use its diplomatic channels to highlight this grave violation of human rights," leaders added. The Shia killings in Parachinar have drawn widespread condemnation from rights groups worldwide. Analysts say the violence reflects deepening sectarian divides in Pakistan, where extremist groups have increasingly targeted minorities. The Parachinar tragedy underscores the failure of the Pakistani government to protect its minorities. This has global implications, as it fuels instability in a region already grappling with terrorism and extremism. Protesters in Ladakh called for unity among Shia communities worldwide. "This is not just about Parachinar; it's about standing together against oppression, no matter where it occurs," said a protesting leader in Kargil. Many also highlighted the resilience of the Shia community in the face of adversity. "Our history is one of resistance. These attacks will not break our spirit; they will only strengthen our resolve," said a protester in Kargil. The protests in Ladakh are part of a growing global outcry against sectarian violence. Organizers announced plans for continued demonstrations and awareness campaigns to keep the issue in the public eye. As the demonstrations concluded peacefully, the message was clear: the Shia community of Ladakh stands firmly with their brethren in Parachinar, demanding justice and an end to the cycle of violence. |
