Kashmir’s longest-surviving terrorist among 5 killed in Kulgam encounter

Jammu, Dec 19: In a big success in the ongoing anti-terror operations, the security forces on Thursday eliminated five terrorists including one of the most wanted and longest surviving self-styled commander of the pro-Pakistan proscribed terror group Hizbul Mujahideen namely Farooq Ahmed Bhat alias Farooq Nali.
Although security forces have confirmed the elimination of five terrorists, some more terrorists are likely to be trapped in the encounter which started late Wednesday evening in south Kashmir’s Kulgam area. Bhat was active in the region since 2015.
Farooq Ahmed Bhat, the most high-profile terrorists killed in the operation, had been responsible for orchestrating several attacks across South Kashmir and was reportedly involved in planning and executing attacks on security forces. 37 FIRs were registered against Bhat and his elimination is being hailed as a major success in the fight against Hizbul Mujahideen and a blow to the outfit.
The other militants killed in the encounter were identified as Adil Hussain, son of Ghulam Muhammad Hajam, a resident of Kandipora, Kulgam, who had been active since 2020, Mushtaq Ahmad Itoo, son of Ghulam Hassan Itoo, a resident of Muhammad Pora, Kulgam, Yasir Javid Bhat, son of Javid Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Khanpora Yaripora, Kulgam and Muhammad Irfan Lone, son of Muhammad Yaqoob Lone, a resident of Hawoor, Kulgam.

One of the most wanted and longest surviving self-styled Hizbul commander Farooq Ahmed Bhat alias Farooq Nali was killed.
Bhat was active in the region since 2015and was responsible for orchestrating several attacks across South Kashmir.
As many as 37 FIRs were registered against Bhat and his elimination is being hailed as a major success for the security forces.
after getting information about the presence of terrorists, a joint operation was launched by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir late Wednesday evening at the Kader area of the Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir.
“Suspicious activity was observed by vigilant troops and on being challenged, terrorists opened an indiscriminate and heavy volume of fire. Own troops effectively retaliated which resulted in a fierce encounter”, a spokesperson of the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps of the Indian Army posted on the official social media handle.
Sharing details of the encounter, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of South Kashmir Javid Iqbal said in the exchange of fire, five terrorists were killed and two soldiers sustained injuries.
DIG said that the injured soldiers were promptly evacuated to a medical facility for treatment, and their conditions are stable.
He said the operation is still underway, and the details will be shared once it concludes. He added that the killed terrorists probably belonged to Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) and that the bodies of the killed terrorists are being retrieved.
Meanwhile, the Army’s Chinar Corps also wrote on X: “Update: OP KADER, Kulgam. Five terrorists have been neutralized by the security forces in the ongoing operation in Kader, Kulgam. During the firefight, two soldiers have suffered injuries and have been evacuated for medical care. Operation is in progress”.
