MeT predicts week-long wet weather in J&K

SRINAGAR, Jan 29: As “Chillai Kalan’ approaches its end, the Meteorological Centre in Srinagar has forecast a week of wet weather starting Wednesday afternoon in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.
The 40-day-long harshest period of winter, known as “Chillai Kalan,” in the Kashmir Valley is set to conclude on January 30. This phase largely remained dry, except for two brief spells of snowfall.
The MeT office said the weather will generally remain cloudy with the possibility of widespread rain and snow over Jammu and Kashmir this afternoon.
It said there are chances of fairly widespread light to moderate rain, snow, and thunderstorms on Thursday.
The weather generally will remain dry and cloudy with the possibility of light rain and snow over the isolated reaches on Friday while another fairly widespread spell of rain and snow is possible on Saturday, the MeT office said.
The wet weather will continue till February 4 with the forecast of widespread rain and snow over Jammu and Kashmir on February 3.
Meanwhile, the night temperature significantly improved amid cloud cover in the Kashmir Valley on Wednesday.
The minimum temperature recorded in Srinagar during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday was 1.9 C against the -4.3 C the previous night, and this was 2.8 C above normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
The day temperature recorded in Srinagar on Tuesday was 6.2 C above the normal of 7.9 C.
The minimum temperature also witnessed a significant rise in other weather stations of the valley, with the tourist resort of Pahalgam recorded at -0.8 C and the ski resort of Gulmarg at -2.5 C on Wednesday.
