2 months on, cause behind mysterious Badhaal deaths still unknown | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 7: Although thirty-eight patients have been discharged after complete recovery, authorities remain clueless about the cause behind a series of mysterious deaths in Badhaal village of Rajouri district, even as two months have passed since the first reported case. The unexplained illness, which first surfaced on December 7, 2024, has so far claimed 17 lives, sparking panic and uncertainty among residents. The crisis began on December 7, when seven-year-old Nazia Kousar from Badhaal village died after showing symptoms consistent with food poisoning. Her two elder brothers, Ishtiaq (9) and Ashfaq (11), were rushed to Kotranka Civil Hospital and later referred to GMC Jammu for specialized treatment. Ishtiaq succumbed to the illness while undergoing treatment. The tragedy deepened when their 12-year-old sister, Ruksar, died three days later while receiving treatment in Jammu. Earlier, their father Fazal Hussain and three siblings—Rabia Kousar (15), Farmana Kousar (12), and Rafter Ahmad (4)—had also died under similar circumstances on December 8. Despite repeated assurances from health officials and district authorities, no conclusive cause has been determined. Several teams of doctors and health experts have visited the village, but the mystery surrounding the deaths remains unsolved. The sudden and unexplained nature of the illness has left locals deeply anxious, with many fearing for their safety. The affected families and residents of Badhaal village have expressed frustration over the administration’s failure to diagnose the illness or take effective preventive measures. “We are living in constant fear. Every few days, another life is lost, and officials are yet to tell us what’s causing these deaths,” said a local resident, adding that the lack of clear communication from the authorities has only worsened their anxiety. Many villagers have started avoiding public gatherings and restricting movement out of fear that the illness could spread further. Some have even resorted to traditional remedies and prayers, as medical interventions have yet to yield results. Health teams deployed to Badhaal have conducted multiple medical camps and collected samples for testing. However, initial reports have failed to identify the root cause of the illness. Tests for water contamination, viral infections, and foodborne diseases have not provided any definitive conclusions. The district administration has sought expert intervention, including from medical teams outside Jammu and Kashmir, but the situation remains unresolved. A senior health official, speaking on condition of anonymity, admitted that the lack of a clear diagnosis is a major concern. “We have examined all possible causes, including bacterial and viral infections, but so far, we have not found anything conclusive. This is a rare and unusual case, and we are working with top experts to determine the cause,” the official said. In the absence of a clear diagnosis, authorities have urged residents to follow precautionary measures. People have been advised to drink only boiled or filtered water, avoid consuming stale or unhygienic food, and report any symptoms such as fever, vomiting, or breathing difficulties immediately. Meanwhile, families of the victims continue to demand accountability and swift action to curb further casualties. With each passing day, fear grips Badhaal village, as the mystery behind these tragic deaths remains unsolved. |
